Vision
Intent
Our intent in Sociology is to empower students to understand and critically explore the structures and issues within modern society. Grounded in the values of Kindness, Respect, and Determination, our curriculum develops socially aware, empathetic, and analytical learners who are prepared to question inequalities, celebrate diversity, and make a positive contribution to their communities.
Implementation
Sociology is delivered through a carefully sequenced curriculum that builds knowledge, develops skills, and promotes independent thinking. We explicitly model and expect kindness in discussions around sensitive social topics. Respect is embedded through the exploration of diverse cultures, beliefs, and social experiences. We instil determination by encouraging students to tackle challenging sociological theories and concepts.
To support long-term learning, retrieval practice is embedded into lessons through regular low-stakes quizzes, knowledge recall activities, and spaced practice. Assessment is rigorous and purposeful: students are given regular opportunities to complete practice exam questions, receiving detailed feedback to help them improve. Assessment also includes peer and self-evaluation, targeted marking, and re-teaching where necessary, ensuring all students make sustained progress.
Impact
Students leave Sociology as reflective, informed citizens with a strong understanding of the forces that shape their world. They demonstrate kindness through empathy and understanding of others’ experiences, respect by valuing diversity and promoting equality, and determination through their ability to analyse, evaluate, and construct well-reasoned arguments. Our robust use of retrieval and assessment ensures students are exam-ready, confident, and prepared for further academic study or to enter society as thoughtful, responsible individuals.
