Vision

The Cox Green MFL department ensured that all students developed their communication and linguistic skills, a cultural knowledge of, and an appreciation for the French and Spanish speaking world, together with a passion for learning languages. As a department, we ensured that students left Cox Green understanding that learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. We endeavoured to ensure that we equipped pupils to study and work in other countries in order to show the fantastic opportunities that learning a language creates.

Intent

  • Develop communication skills
  • Increase cultural awareness and appreciation
  • Develop confidence, passion and independence
  • To understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • To speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • To be able to write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
  • To discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied

Implementation

Our curriculum is shaped by our school vision which aims to enable all children, regardless of background, ability or additional needs, to flourish and become the very best version of themselves they can possibly be.

Our focus is to develop robust grammatical knowledge and to enable students to develop confidence in communication. We therefore use a structure, which allows students to revisit the same topics but each time at a more advanced level. This in turn, produces successful linguists.

Impact

  • Grammar focus to develop robust grammatical knowledge which is what underpins a successful linguist
  • Spiral learning to develop knowledge and skills with the opportunity to revisit and deepen knowledge
  • Topics from KS4 are built into KS3 to allow a smooth transition into GCSE
  • Reduced number of topics at KS3 to ensure a thorough understanding and ability to build on what is learnt
  • Students should be able to read and listen to the target language and understand it
  • Students should be able to write and speak in the target language
  • Students should be able to communicate successfully in the target language
  • Students should have a wide range of vocabulary and grammatical structures
  • Students should have a cultural understanding of French and Spanish speaking countries.
