Year 7
In Year 7, we ensure that students make an effective transition from primary to secondary school English. Students begin their journey recalling and retrieving KS2 terminology embedded within an engaging curriculum introducing essay writing skills, balancing critical with creating thinking and developing extended writing through diversifying the range and breadth of texts pupils will be encouraged to adapt to. Pupils will be given the opportunity to read with teachers at multiple points throughout the academic year. Their engagement in the Cox Green 150 Reading Challenge as well as their weekly Reading Progress on Teams will aid their vocabulary, comprehension, and creative writing skills. Parents can support their child’s learning by ensuring that pupils are reading for pleasure a minimum of 10 minutes per night. Year 8

Students become adept at evaluation and lateral thinking, by examining different perspectives through a critical lens. My Sister Lives on the Mantlepiece focuses on more nuanced mature themes allowing students to explore a text in more depth which is a pathway to how students approach GCSE style novels examining authorial intent. Pupils will be given the opportunity to read with teachers at multiple points throughout the academic year. Their engagement in the Cox Green 150 Reading Challenge as well as their weekly Reading Progress on Teams will aid their vocabulary, comprehension, and creative writing skills. Year 9
Y9 English lays down important foundations for the GCSE English Language and English Literature course. The curriculum units will challenge students to learn and apply more nuanced writing conventions and develop their own personal style with layered degrees of sophistication. Through their developing critical lens, exploring the theme of marginalisation, students will begin with the play Blood Brothers by Willy Russell examining social class and inequality, before examining marginalised classes of society throughout history in Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet and John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. Pupils will be given the opportunity to read with teachers at multiple points throughout the academic year. Their engagement in the Cox Green 150 Reading Challenge as well as their weekly Reading Progress on Teams will aid their vocabulary, comprehension, and creative writing skills. Additionally, fortnightly creative writing lessons allow students to finesse their skills in narrative, descriptive and transactional writing. Year 10
The majority of the English GCSE content will be taught in Y10 with several opportunities built into the curriculum to demonstrate progress. At the beginning of a unit pupils will be guided on how to respond to the various demands of the GCSE tasks. Live feedback is woven into the fabric of each lesson where extended writing practice is embedded aimed at addressing misconceptions or issues with particular assessment objectives. Students will then have mid-unit assessments before having an end of unit assessment to determine and measure against a predicted GCSE grade. Year 11
In Year 11, students will be afforded the opportunity to refine their GCSE responses. With the majority of content taught in Year 10, students will be a position to respond to extracts by referring to the wider text. There will be a focus on essay, time management and response structure in order to target assessment objectives aiding each pupil’s ability to work within tight time constraints. Once a fortnight, teachers will facilitate live-feedback lessons where students, under exam conditions within classrooms, sitting GCSE style papers and questions. This is aimed at addressing misconceptions or issues with particular assessment objectives prior to their GCSE exams.

Year 12
During their Year 12 studies, we ensure that students transition effectively from their GCSE studies to A Level. A major focus is on developing their ability to respond to questions with a sophisticated, evidence based argument that stems from a thorough understanding of characterisation and themes. This is seen in both their prose and drama answers. Alternative interpretations are encouraged particularly in poetry as are engagement with critics. Challenging texts such as A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams and the Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde assist in this development.

In Year 13 students study both Shakespeare’s Othello and Christina Rossetti’s poetry building on their Year 12 skills. Their prose comparative skills assist in the independent coursework they submit. Coursework is always comprised of texts the students have chosen themselves therefore giving students the opportunity to read widely in a variety of genres and focus on a thematic or language topic of their choice.
